Heat Pump Viability Assessments
With our increasingly hotter summers and heat domes here on Vancouver Island, are you, as a property manager or strata board, feeling the increased demand from tenants and owners for Heat Pumps?
At Patriot Electric, we can help.
Some electrical equipment, such as heat pumps and EV Chargers will put a heavy load on your building’s electrical system which cannot simply be added without an assessment and a plan. When most buildings were constructed, making allowances for air conditioning were costly so contractors and developers opted for gas efficiency furnaces instead. But these furnaces do not help your carbon footprint.
As a Strata, you may need to amend your bylaws to accommodate these changes to your infrastructure and for ongoing monitoring of your electrical demand.
At Patriot Electric, we can conduct heat pump viability assessments to determine the effects of heat pump installations on your main electrical service.
First, we determine if your building’s electrical system can handle it. Our team will prepare a load calculation using collected information from BC Hydro load data and based on the requirements of local guidelines, such as the Canadian Electrical Code (C22.1:21), to determine the load capacity available on your main service.
Finally, we provide you with the answers about what your existing electrical capacity can support, using our collected data and load calculations. These technical documents are intended to provide you and your strata with strategies that can help you make informed decisions.
In the scenario where we find there is insufficient capacity to provide enough heat pump units based on your load data, we can provide solutions to implement them. A load management system can allow for load shedding to reduce energy consumption and maximum demand, which can allow the addition of heat pumps and other electrical equipment with significantly less costs incurred when compared to the expense of increasing your main service capacity.
